Your Child Won't Try New Things — How to Help Without Forcing It

2026-02-17

Some kids see a new class and want to jump right in. Others need to stand and watch from the doorway for a long while before they're ready to try. Neither is "better" — each child just has a different way of handling something new.

Start by letting them know what to expect

Before a trial class, you can explain simply what will happen: where you're going, who they'll meet, roughly how long it'll take, and what they'll do. Familiarity with what's coming reduces uncertainty.

Don't rush to call it "not brave enough"

Instead of saying "why aren't you brave like the other kids," try "you can just watch first, and try it when you're ready." That small shift in language can keep a child from feeling judged.

Use step-by-step exposure

The first visit might just be watching. Next time, join in for part of it. Then gradually extend the time. Some kids simply need time to build familiarity.

Invite, don't force

Offering choices helps — "want to try Piano or Art first?" instead of "you have to pick something." It gives the child a sense of agency in the decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is GIVE SPACE a good fit for a child who's reluctant to try new things?

Yes — because we don't have to start from something completely unfamiliar to the child. If they love music, we can start with Music or Dance; if they love drawing, we can start with Art; if they love Minecraft, we can start with Minecraft Education. Starting from something already familiar often makes it easier for a child to open up to new experiences.

Do we have to force our child into a class from the very first visit?

We prioritize a child's readiness, because the goal isn't just "getting them through the door" — it's creating an experience that makes them want to come back and learn more.

If your child doesn't warm up easily to new things, tell us what they already like — we'll help find the right starting point.
