Not Sure What Your Child Likes? Here's What to Try First

"My child doesn't seem especially drawn to anything — what should they learn?"

This is a question parents don't need to answer right away. Some kids show clear interests early on, but many need to experience a range of things first before they know what they like.

Don't wait for your child to say "I want to learn..." — if they've never tried something, they may not even know what that activity is.

Try one activity from each category

• Sound-based activities, like Music or Singing
• Movement-based activities, like Ballet, K-Pop, Hip-Hop, or Taekwondo
• Creative activities, like Art or Craft
• Problem-solving activities, like Robotics, Minecraft Education, or 3D Printing

Then, instead of asking "did you like it?" right away, observe their behavior:

• Were they engaged during the class?
• Did they talk about the class afterward?
• Do they want to keep doing it at home?
• If they made a mistake, do they still want to try again?

"Good at it" doesn't equal "likes it"

This is a distinction parents should watch for. A child might do well at something because they pick it up quickly, but not actually want to continue. Meanwhile, they might not be great at another activity yet, but enjoy it and want to keep improving. Over the long run, motivation matters far more than early skill.

Trying things out doesn't mean switching constantly

Once you find something your child is genuinely interested in, give them enough continuous time to get past the beginning stage. Nearly every skill has a point where it gets harder — if a child stops the moment things get difficult, they never get to experience what it feels like to push through and succeed.
